Review : The Story of Awkward

The Story of Awkward

By: R. K. Ryals

 Blurb:

If you are looking for a happy book about beautiful people, this is the wrong story. If you are looking for a narrative without emotion, without regrets, and without mistakes, this is definitely the wrong story. This is by no means an uncomplicated tale about uncomplicated people. It is by no means sweet or light. This story is ugly. This story is complicated. This story is emotional. This story is tragic. In short, this story is about being awkward. Peregrine Storke is an artist with an odd sketchbook full of pictures she’s drawn since she was a child. It is a book full of strange sketches and awkward characters, for there is no better way to hide from bullying and life than to create a world of your own. With a stroke of her pencil, she has given life to a spectacled princess, a freckle-nosed king, a candy loving troll, a two-horned unicorn, and a graceless fairy. At nineteen, Peregrine leaves her home, her sketchbook, and awkwardness behind. But what happens when something goes wrong in the world of Awkward? Trapped inside of her complex realm with the bully she thought to leave behind, Peregrine discovers there is nothing worse than falling for your own villain.

Review:

This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Ryals and I can honestly say that it won’t be my last. This book is outstanding. It tells the truth about the world in an amazing way with a brilliant point of view.

The Story of Awkward was so creative! I’ve been sharing this book with everyone close to me, I loved it so much.

It tells a story about Peregrine Storke and how herself and her life is, in her mind, awkward compared to everyone else she knows. Perri does have it rough, I’ll tell you that. She has parental problems and school issues, health issues… the list goes on and on. Perri does find a pretty good escape. She sketches her pain and insecurities away. It’s the only thing that helps.

I could keep going telling you about everything that
happens in this book, but what’s the fun in that? Like… go read it yourself, dude. Don’t let me take all the fun out of it.

Anyway, through Perri’s whimsical world of Awkward she
learns some super valuable lessons. The main one being “Be proud to be who you are!”

I absolutely love that lesson!!! And I love that R. K. Ryals
conveyed that in such a fantastical, and whimsical way. In my opinion, it is SOOOO important to tell people the truth about society and the expectations of the world nowadays.

We all need to learn that we are perfect how we are.
Doesn’t matter if you’re short, fat, skinny, tall, freckle faced, or anything else. You are seriously beautiful exactly how you are. People need this reminder. I’m so glad that there is a book out there that can show everyone this moral.

**Gets off soapbox**

Aside from all of that, this book was so amazing. I loved the plot, the imagery, the point of view, all of the characters. It was SO GOOD!! I felt like I was walking in Awkward with Perri. And the whole place was so gorgeous.

There were so many crazy creatures, and they were all
sketched by Perri to be awkward! A unicorn with two horns, a too fat troll, a bookworm who was thesaurus smart, a pink waterfall. Always a strange take on what you’d expect. It was beautiful. I wish I could have REALLY been there and seen it all first hand.

You guys really need to check this book out. You won’t regret it!!

This book so deserves FIVE STARS!
