Nev by Kristi Ayers
Review by Ashley Lynn Gill
Five years after her mother's death, Nev has the routine down of juggling high school and housework to maintain a semblance of normalcy of her dad and older brother. Her adopted cousin, Cameron, never one to let her shoulder the burden, often comes over to help her. He's gotten so used to her company, witnessing her humorous pranks on her brother and watching favorite movies together, that when she begins dating, he becomes protective. Constantly worrying about her safety with the school's most coveted bad boy, Cameron's feelings slowly start to turn into something more that wars with his subconscious. When Nev takes a night to let loose, life plants her onto the first step of a harsh reality, one that she hopes to escaped with the family's annual summer trip to Colorado. And Cameron plans to be there to help her along the way, conspiring with the universe to see that her heart never breaks again because , after all, she is his everything, whether she knows it or not. Cameron is soon faced with addressing his complicated feelings and the prospect of letting Nev know is deepest secret.
Review :
Nev isn't your typical high student , after losing her mom five years before she has taken a leading role in her house. She cooks , cleans and looks after her father and older brother. A lot of responsibility at a young but she decides she needs some time to be a teenager and begins dating the high school bad boy and her cousin Cameron isn't too happy with this and later we find out for good reason.
Cameron is a sweetheart, a very caring young man who worries about his cousin taking on too much and becomes even more worried after she starts dating someone he thinks is dangerous. Cameron starts to realize his feelings for Nev is more than love for family but that he is in love with her. How will Nev and their family feel? He was adopted, they're not blood related. Will that make accepting his love easier for Nev and their family ?
This was a short read but there was A LOT packed into it, maybe a little too much for me. Too many serious issues packed into such a small book, I believe I would have liked it better if it was more spaced out and maybe even a series. I never had a chance to fully have feelings about a lot of things that were happening because as I went to the next page something else was occurring. For me personally I was taken back by the cousin relationship, I understand they weren't blood related and that was mentioned heavily throughout the book but it also gave off the message if you're adopted your adopted family isn't technically family.
If you're up for a short read with lots of twists and turns this book is for you, I really enjoyed Kristi Ayers writing style and my only complaint that it was too much for a small book. I would have enjoyed it more if it were spaced out more and turned into a series that way each subject matter could have really been addressed instead of rushed. I look forward to checking out more of Kristi's books.
