Spotlight Sunday: Jovee Winters

Spotlight Sunday:

Jovee Winters

I have read every stinking one of Jovee's works of art and I can honestly say that I loooooove her.

How she manages to spin all of these fairy tales into something devious, romantic, and hilarious at the same time is beyond me. She doesn't just use the usual characters, she digs deeper. And for that reason, plus more, is why I fell in love with her books. You never know what to expect.

Q: What is your name?

A: Jovee Winters

Q: The Title of your Work or Group.
A: The Sea Queen

Q: Where are you from? (Does not have to be the name exactly.)
A: Born and raised the first part of my life in Panama before moving to the United States.

Q: In what genre do you write?

A: A little bit of everything under several different pen names. Marie Hall. Summer Evans who does military romances, Selene Charles and RS Black who do Urban Fantasy, and Jovee Winters who strictly writes paranormal romances.

Q: In your own words, what is your book about? If you were not the author and trying to explain this awesome book/series you just read to your friend, what would you say about it?

A: What happens when an elemental goddess of the waters decides she wants to learn how to live as a human, hilarity, excitement, and lots of fun, steamy sex with none other than Hades, Lord of the Underworld. Because it seems like just the sort of thing to do for a goddess both ancient and young like Calypso who hasn’t the first clue just what kind of beast she’s actually claimed.

Q: What is your writing style? Do you follow all guides and rules? Synopsis, outline, etc. Or do you just sit down at the computer and type to see what happens?

A: I am a panster in every sense of the word. I really don’t plot. I have a kernel of an idea, or sometimes just a thought and then I’m off and running. Many times the end result is just as much of a surprise to me as it will be for the readers.

Q: Have you ever written anything and thought, “The world has to see this!!”?
A: Pretty much anything I write as Summer Evans, or the contemporary romances I wrote as Marie Hall. Those books mean a lot to me and have a lot of me in them.

Q: Do you have an editor and Cover Designer or do you do it all yourself?

A: I have both. I switch between Anne Victory at Victory Editing or Red Adept Editing. And cover art is really so varied from genre to genre for me. My Urban Fantasies have been done by Damonza, Dan Dos Santos, and even Nathalia Sullen. My PNR’s are mostly Nathalia Sullen, Phatpuppy, or CrocoFrauke. My contemporary romances are mostly done by CrocoFrauke

Q: Who is your favorite author? Not just someone that you read a lot. I want to know whose book you read that made you suddenly know that if you didn’t do this for the rest of your life then you would never be happy.

A: It’s actually Louisa May Alcott. She wrote a lesser known work that is my absolute favorite of hers. It was called A Long Fatal Love Chase, it was utterly breathtaking and terrifying and transported me to another world full of possibilities as an impressionable child of 12. I loved everything about that book, except the ending. The ending I absolutely hated. I won’t spoil it for anyone who wants to read it, but I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. A feeling that it wasn’t fair and that in fiction at least I should be able to change things. Make them better. After reading that story was when my writing career began, though I didn’t know it at the time. It all started with little stories here and there, until one day I sat down and wrote a twist on a Beauty and the Beast theme (which is terrible and will never see the light of day), but an itch was born in me when I finished that first book. I was 22. I never stopped after that.

Q: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

A: Not particularly.

Q: Do you write your characters or do they write themselves through you?

A: My characters write themselves. I quit on a character if they make me work too hard for it. They have to be real to me in order for me to make them real for others, or why bother?

Q: Do you ever write yourself into the characters?

A: There is always a piece of me in all my books. Mostly my sense of humor is what shines through. To meet me you wouldn’t think I have much of one since I’m pretty serious and thoughtful in real life, but it’s definitely there and my characters are my way of expressing it.

Q: How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

A: HA! Dozens. And no, no one will ever see them.

Q: Is writing your full time job, or are you “keeping your day job” so to speak?

A: This is it for me. I’ve found my calling and even if I never make another dime at this it’s my passion

Q: If you could go back in time and meet one famous person or legend in history, who would it be and why?

A: That’s a good question. Jesus. Definitely Jesus. I want to find the truth.

Q: There are millions of new books released every year. What in your mind makes yours stand out from all those millions in your genre?

A: Not a darn thing. I write for me. The fact that others read the books and love them has been awesome, but I’ve never considered myself a particularly great writer. I have thoughts. I put them on paper (as it were.) That’s really it for me.

Q: In the world of Indie, marketing is very difficult, especially if you don’t have the fund to pay for it. Have you found a great free way to market your work that you think other Indies will benefit from?

A: Never underestimate the power of word of mouth. My first month Indie publishing I only sold 68 books. I didn’t know anyone. But I wrote to a theme that’s pretty universal. Fairy tales, the next month that number went to 250, and so on and so forth to where I am today in the thousands every month. I figure if you write something people are interested in, they’re going to find you. And if this all ends for me someday soon, well, it’s been a heck of a ride.

The Sea Queen is my absolute favorite by Jovee, so I love that she chose that book to share with us. The Sea Queen is book 1 in the Dark Queens series. It is recommended (by me) to read them in order.

(Dark Queens Series Book 1)

Synopsis:

Calypso, Queen of the Seas, is mad. Spitting mad. Ghosts of the dead are fouling her waters. She wants this problem fixed, and she wants it fixed now. Rushing off in search of Hades, Lord of the Underworld, to demand answers, she’s soon shocked to discover him bound and standing trial before a jury of his peers—for nothing less than murder.

Calypso normally despises the beastly gods, all of them, but there’s something about seeing Hades bound as he is that gives her an evilly clever idea. Tired of being a virgin queen, she wishes to shed that boring image once and for all, and no one seems quite as fit for the task as the gorgeous and brooding Hades. Of course, there is the minor problem of murder to deal with, but Calypso is bound and determined to have her way.

And when a dark queen gets an idea, nothing and no one can stand in her way…

Some of my other favorites by Jovee:

(Dark Queens Series: Book 4)

Synopsis:

Baba Yaga is probably the darkest of all the queens. An unrepentant bad girl, she has no time for men, or something as pedestrian as love. Too bad Calypso and Aphrodite never got that memo. They've decided to make the witch their pet project. Baba's choice is simple, fall in love with the male they found her, or die. She'd laugh, except for the little fact that they're totally serious. But Baba has never been a quitter, she'll go to that male, she'll even willingly go through the goddesses ridiculous "games," what she won't do is fall in love. At least, those were her plans until she stared into the ice blue eyes of a Viking god and realized her life would never be the same again...

(Dark Queens Series: Book 6)

Synopsis:

Cruel. Cold. Wicked. Just a few adjectives used to describe the most ancient of fairies—Galeta The Blue. But did you know, dear reader, that once upon a time, long, long ago, the Blue was the Benevolent Pink? Few know the trials of the fae reviled by all, save for one. The ancient and wise Creator. Galeta is the Creator’s daughter, and It will stop at nothing to save her. The truth of who the fairy really is may startle you. She’s the heroine of all of Kingdom. A sad truth no one knows, not even the wee fairy herself. The journey to getting her back will be marred by pain, trials, and tribulations, and when it’s over, Kingdom will never be the same again…

Some of my favorites from Marie Hall (Jovee's Pen Name):
(Although, I really love the entire series)

The first three books of the Kingdom Series:

THIS IS A COLLECTION OF THE FIRST 3 BOOKS. INCLUDED BONUS DELETED SCENES IN BOTH HATTER AND WOLF.

Her Mad Hatter:
Alice is all grown up. Running the Mad Hatter's Cupcakery and Tea Shoppe is a delicious job, until fate--and a fairy godmother with a weakness for bad boys--throws her a curveball. Now, Alice is the newest resident of Wonderland, where the Mad Hatter fuels her fantasies and thrills her body with his dark touch.

The Mad Hatter may have a voice and a body made for sex, but he takes no lovers. Ever. But a determined fairy godmother has forced Alice into Wonderland--and his arms. Now, as desire and madness converge, the Hatter must decide if he will fight the fairy godmother's mating--or fight for Alice.

Gerard's Beauty:

A not so classic retelling of Beauty and the Beast, as seen through the eyes of the villain...

Betty Hart has had it with men. Jilted in love, her life now consists of shelving books by day, watching too much Anime by night, and occasionally dressing up like a superhero on the weekends with her fellow ‘Bleeding Heart’ nerds. Men are not welcome and very much unwanted. Especially the sexy Frenchman who saunters into her library reeking of alcohol and looking like he went one too many rounds in the ring.

Gerard Caron is in trouble. Again. Caught with his pants down (literally) he’s forced to seek asylum on Earth while his fairy godmother tries to keep Prince Charming from going all ‘Off with his head’. Maybe, messing around with the King’s daughter hadn’t been such a great idea after all, not that Gerard knew the silly redhead was a princess. But his fairy godmother knows the only way to save his life is to finally pair Gerard with his perfect mate, whether he’s willing or not.

From the moment Gerard lays eyes on the nerdy librarian he knows he must have her, but Betty is unlike any woman he’s ever known. He thought Betty would come as willingly to his bed as every other woman before her, but she is a woman who demands respect and even… horror of all horrors… love. Is it possible for a self-proclaimed Casanova to change his ways?

Red and Her Wolf:

Long ago there lived a beautiful child. Her name was Violet. Fair of skin, with blonde hair and large blue eyes. Born of wild magic, she was a woman with a child’s heart. Innocent and lovely, but not at all what she seemed--you see Violet went by another name: The Heartsong.

She was the child of fairy magic, the physical manifestation of all fae kinds unbridled power. Cosseted and pampered, she grew up in isolation, never knowing who she really was, or why there were those who’d seek to harm her.

Ewan of the Blackfoot Clan is a wolf with a problem. He’s been sent to kill the Heartsong, but the moment he lays eyes on the blonde beauty he knows he’ll defy the evil fae he works for to claim Violet as his own.

This is the tale of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, as it really happened...

This is not an erotica, just a good old fashioned romance.

My Personal favorite of the entire Kingdom Series:

Synopsis:

Once upon a time, long, long ago a flower fairy looked up to the sky and dared to fall in love with the Man in the Moon...

Or so goes the tale that Danika weaves for the gathered fae children. Tonight is the night to learn a hidden tale of Kingdom. A story long forgotten, remembered by few. A tale of treachery, of love, betrayal and woe... but there's more to the story than meets the eye. This isn't just a tale of Jericho and Calanthe and their doomed Shakespearean romance, for tonight the truth of one beloved Kingdom character will be revealed.

Connect with BJ:

I live in the Midwest with my husband and our two dogs.  I love dogs, enjoy spending time with my daughter, babysitting dogs and kids, reading and working puzzles.  We have traveled extensively throughout the states, Canada and just once overseas, but I much prefer being homebody.  I worked for a while writing articles for a local magazine but soon found my interest in writing for myself peaking.  My first book was strictly spanking erotica, but I slowly evolved to writing erotic romance with an emphasis on spanking.  My favorite genre to read is suspense.

EXCERPT (R) From Book 1 Logan:

Melanie’s startled squeak reverberated around the yard when Logan snatched her arm, sat on the lounge and hauled her over his lap.  Before she had even grasped the fact he was actually going to spank her, he had her short skirt flipped up and the matching tights yanked down, baring her butt to his gaze and the warm afternoon sun.  Humiliation heated her face and tightened every muscle.  She’d come over to be supportive and this was how he treated her?

Then the first sharp slap resonated throughout her body, the slight sting more surprising than painful. Instant, searing arousal dampened her sheath, the warm waft of air sliding across her buttocks adding even more heat to the burn between her legs that was at odds with her mortification.  How could she be embarrassed and excited at the same time?

She didn’t have time to ponder her contradictory emotions further as he landed a stinging slap on her right cheek that sent her legs kicking up and her head swiveling around.  “Ow!” she exclaimed in automatic response to the much sharper pain.

“Be quiet, unless you want the neighbors to hear you.  You’ve been asking for this for a long time.  Deal with it.”
Logan pinned Melanie’s shoulders with his free hand and proceeded to pepper her buttocks with a quick volley of smacks, keeping them light, just hard enough to sting a little.  She gritted her teeth, needing to prove to him she could take whatever he dished out, could be whatever he needed her to be in order to get and keep his attention.

Her lip throbbed from biting it against the barrage of smacks he covered her entire backside with, some hard enough to urge the clenching of her buttocks in response, others just light taps that sent a zing of pleasure arrowing down between her legs.  The discomfort and embarrassment were more than she had expected when watching him all those years ago, but the budding arousal blossoming with each swat was everything Melanie knew she would feel from having his hands on her.  The combination of contrary sensations seemed to work together in building her response to a feverish pitch.

The unexpected smack aimed at the sensitive skin of the under curve of her buttock jolted her into pleading for something she couldn’t put a name to that lay just beyond her grasp.  “Logan, please.”  Shifting her hips against his rock-hard thighs elicited a gush of moisture from her core and an instant wave of tingling pleasure at odds with the pulsing heat encompassing her butt.

This girl is too innocent for either of those things.

She wants me because of the way we lock eyes. The way we instantly hit it off. The way we seem to have been made for each other.

Excerpt:

Scarlet Excerpt:

My feet were curled beneath me as I leaned back against my pillows. I opened my book to the marked page and smiled to myself. With my schoolwork and chores, I couldn’t read as much as I wished. It had been almost two weeks since I last opened Flames of Sorrow.

No one understood my love for romance novels, but I was obsessed. They were my one escape, my way of stepping away from reality. When I read, I believed in soul mates and passionate love. I could experience exciting things through the characters in these books.

Flames of Sorrow was about a couple who were doomed to spend eternity apart. They were both immortal and therefore, destined to live forever. The only negative was that they could never be together. If they so much as looked at each other, they each began to develop a horrible illness.

Still, they managed to spend one day together every five years. If they kept their time together limited, they wouldn’t get sick. One day was never enough, but it was all they had. They were willing to risk everything simply to be together. I’d read Flames of Sorrow many times before, but I always came back to it. To me, it embodied the definition of true love. They loved each other with a passion I’d never known. Plus, the sex scenes were amazing.

I found myself hiding in my room late at night, reading the scenes to myself, imagining what it would feel like to act them out with a man. I knew it was just a fantasy, something I could only dream about enjoying one day. Still, it was my fantasy, and it got me through my mundane life.

As I read, I lost myself in the pages. I became Annabella, faithfully waiting for Diego to find his way back to me. I was her and she was me. In those moments, I became one with my book, and I loved every single second of it. Until my mother entered my room without knocking and pulled me back to reality with a painful thump. I jumped, shutting the book quickly and looking at her attentively. My nerves were immediately on edge. My mother didn’t approve of my extracurricular activities, and she made her opinions known every chance she got. “Scarlet,” Mom said, shaking her head. “Why on Earth are you wasting your time with this nonsense?”

“I like it,” I said with a shrug. Her disapproval bothered me, but I tucked the book under my pillow all the same. If it was out of sight, she would forget about it quickly.

Claire Timms was not your typical mother. She was more protective than anyone else in the world. Having been homeschooled most of my life, I was ecstatic to start college, but my mother made sure I didn’t leave home. Instead, I attended the local college and took classes there.

I tried to persuade my mom to let me move into a dorm room, but she refused. She said it was too dangerous, that I would be exposed to horrible things. I didn’t know enough to argue with her, but deep down, I thought she was wrong. I saw the fun college students had, and I was desperate to partake. “You’ve read it a thousand times,” Mom said, rolling her eyes.

“Not that many,” I said. “Besides, I’ve been so busy lately, I haven’t had time to read anything. Now that school’s over, I can finally enjoy myself again.” “You can,” she admitted with a nod. “Bu, you need to pick better ways to spend your time. Those novels just fill your head with all kinds of fantasies, Scarlet. They aren’t real. Men like that, they just don’t exist.” “Maybe they do,” I said softly. “Somewhere.”

Luciens Excerpt:

“Love is overrated,” I said with authority. “The only things women want me more for are my body or my money. I’m happy to share my body with them, but my money? No. It’s not worth it.” “It could be worth it,” Adam argued. “If you found the right girl.” “No such thing,” I said. “They’re all the same. Just gold-digging naggers.” Adam laughed. “Damn, that’s harsh.” “Maybe,” I said, “But it’s the truth.” “I don’t think so, man,” Adam said. “Love is real. There’s someone out there for everyone, even you.” “You sound like such a chick right now,” I groaned. “What the hell happened to you?” He laughed. “Nothing. I’m just not you.” “Clearly.”

We fell silent for a while, just waiting for the minutes to tick by. When I checked my watch, I saw that we had half an hour left. I groaned and leaned my head back against my seat. Adam handed me a magazine and I nodded gratefully. I wasn’t at all interested in reading, but it was better than staring at the ceiling.

I flipped open the cover and mindlessly turned the pages. Nothing caught my eye. I closed the magazine with frustration and glanced around. Adam was captivated by his magazine, and I didn’t want to bother him. Instead, I looked around the terminal, searching for a bar. When I found one, I half-rose from my seat until I heard a nervous voice coming from my right. “I’m sorry, but I don’t understand. I have a ticket. Why can’t I get on the flight?” I glanced over to see a girl about my age standing at the ticket counter. She had her hands on the counter, and her green eyes were wide with fear. My eyes were instantly drawn to her long, red hair. It flowed down her back smoothly, and I found myself wishing I could run my fingers through it. Shaking my head, I got rid of those thoughts and focused on her conversation.

“We’re overbooked,” the gate attendant said. “I’m sorry, but there’s just no room on the flight. We have to bump someone and since yours was the last ticket purchased, it has to be you.” The girl stared at the gate attendant in horror. I could tell she was at a total loss. She’d clearly never been in this situation before. Judging by the way she kept tapping her foot, she was incredibly nervous.

I didn’t know what compelled me to do it, but I was suddenly on my feet. The girl just looked so lost and helpless that I couldn’t resist. I hurried toward the counter and stepped up beside her. Smiling kindly at her, I turned my attention to the gate attendant. “Is there a problem?” I asked. “No sir,” the gate attendant said. “I’m just explaining our policy to this young lady. There’s no need to get involved.” Her voice was firm, and her eyes were set. She didn’t want me to cause a scene in the middle of the airport, but I wasn’t happy about the situation. This beautiful girl was standing alone at the ticket counter, asking for help, and no one came to her rescue. So, I did. “And what policy is that?” I asked. I kept my voice level, calm. “Sir, we’ve overbooked the flight,” the attendant explained.

“So, unfortunately, we have to bump someone. I’ve just informed this young lady that she’s been bumped.” I nodded. “I see. Well, my friend and I actually bought an extra ticket because we like to have space on our flights, but if this woman needs the seat, it’s all hers.”

“You don’t have to do this,” the girl whispered to me. I glanced at her and smiled encouragingly. She smiled back, her cheeks blushing slightly. “You have an extra ticket?” the attendant asked with a frown. “I do,” I said. I pulled out my boarding passes and handed them to her. She nodded. “I see. Well, that seems fine then.” I smiled. “Perfect.”
The attendant typed something on her computer and then printed out a new boarding pass for the girl beside me. She handed it to her, and we turned away from the counter. I looked at the girl kindly and waited for her to speak. She was blushing brighter than ever and seemed to be at a loss for words.

The sight was incredibly endearing. “You really didn’t have to do that,” she said softly. “I mean, thank you, but it wasn’t necessary.” “It’s not a problem,” I said. “That policy is total bullshit anyway. Why would they sell more tickets than they could accommodate? It doesn’t make sense, does it?” She laughed.

“No, I guess it doesn’t.” “What’s your name?” I asked, stepping closer to her. “I’m Scarlet,” she said. I smiled. “Well Scarlet, I’m Lucien.” “It’s nice to meet you, Lucien.” She smiled and extended her hand to me. We shook hands, and then she looked down at her feet, nervous again.

I fought the urge to laugh at her discomfort. She was already embarrassed, and I didn’t want to make her feel even worse about herself. She looked so innocent standing there in the airport. With her dark red hair and emerald green eyes, she could have been a model, but she seemed completely unaware of her beauty. I could tell by the way she shifted her weight from one foot to the other that she wasn’t used to this much attention from a man, especially not one as attractive as me.
